Yes, it's true. My cat's favorite toys are boxes and straws, and currently, the case new contacts come in that she "rescued" (from the trash).

Also true. She has "her" basket by the front door, which she does fit in, but anytime there is anything open that appears that she might fit in, she gets in it. Including but not limited to shoes boxes, bowls, and the occasional plastic bag.
