My Garden

On the right is our "greenhouse." It blew over this morning. =( Everyone is ok though. We were trying to find an easier way to cover the plants when it is cold. This needs some modifications.

Two of my four broccoli plants. I love me some nice fresh broccoli.

My "cold-phobic" plants. From left to right, top to bottom: 4 tomatoes, 6 red bell pepper, 1 cherry tomato, and 1 jalapeno (ok, it is actally "Garden Salsa", but it is a hot pepper.)

My little pea shoots. Yes, they are not cold-phobic, I just planted them in the wrong box. Oops.

Sad kitty wants to come out and play.

I love planting in my garden. We went to apparently the most popular garden store on Saturday. It was INSANE! I did get some good plants though. I am so very excited.

So what all do I have planted? LOTS OF STUFF! We have 4 broccoli plants, 2 blocks of carrots, 4 blocks of green beans, 2 blocks of onions (fingers crossed that these actually grow this year), 1 block of green onions, half a block of radishes, 1 block of beets (I don't have much hope for these. I planted them a couple weeks ago, but my seeds were old and didn't grow. It took me 3 weeks to get back to the store and get more, so it is probably too hot for them to grow), and some very sad swiss chard. They froze. They are valiently trying to live. I don't hope much for them. Then in the second box I have 4 "globe" (regular) tomatoes, 1 cherry tomato, 6 red bell peppers, 1 hot pepper, 1 block of sugar snap peas and 3 blocks of shelling peas. I am really hoping for the peas. These are in the two large boxes that you can see in the first picture. We also have a small "in-ground" plot where we will be growing a 3'x3' block of popcorn and a 3'x3' block of sweet corn. AND a few pumpkin vines. (Those are mostly for fun. Well ok, the whole garden is mostly for fun. I grow stuff we like, and having fresh salsa from the garden makes me VERY happy. But I know that I am not the world's best gardner or anywhere near it, so if things die or don't produce, I grieve and move on.) We also have two containers of garlic which are doing VERY well and one container of lettuce. I am still trying to figure out where to put my cucumbers. They were in the pumpkin's spot last year, but they did better once the corn was out. Too much shade I think. So I am toying with the idea of putting them in the front corner and training them up the fence as a trellis. I am worried about two things: Tanner peeing on them and Tanner eating them. He likes cucumber. He is funny though because if I give him a slice, he will eat all but the rind (just like his mom. I'm so proud!). But I can't really think of anywhere else to put them. How can we fit all this in such a small plot? Square foot gardening my friend. It's awesome.

I'm so impressed by all your hard work with your garden. One of these years I will beg for your help in getting myself a little garden box going. By then I'm sure you'll be pro. :)

The pictures definitely bring back memories of our early gardens ... like the one that you loved to run out and pick fresh green peppers from.
